What You Need To Do Before Buying Your Garden Shed

Article by Jamie Simpson

Garden sheds are useful for anyone who does a fair amount of yard work or gardening. Before purchasing one, there are a number of important things that need to be considered. Before any groundwork is done or anything is purchased, the homeowner needs to ensure that all proper permits and required paperwork is done. This may include getting approval from a homeowners association, a permit from the local borough or village, approval from the utility companies and more. For people that live in a community that is governed by a homeowners association, there may be very specific guidelines. This can include the size, colour and material of the unit. Specific plans and a formal request may need to be submitted to a committee for approval before the homeowner can proceed. Every area will differ as far as what is required, so it is important that the homeowner investigate the specifics before any work is done. The next consideration would be the location of the shed and any necessary preparation that may need to be done. This would include the preparation of the ground to ensure that it is level and the placement of a concrete pad if required. If a gravel or concrete pad is not going to be used, it is generally not a good idea to have the unit directly on the ground. Concrete block or bricks should be used as a base. This will help to level the structure and protect it from water damage from the ground. For a wooden shed, this is essential. Before actually purchasing a shed, it should be determined what is required. By looking at the tools that need to be stored and the type of work that is generally done in the garden and the yard, one will be able to decide on an appropriately sized structure. This will vary from one home to the next. A homeowner that has machinery such as a roto-tiller and riding lawn tractor will require more space than someone who only needs to store hand tools. It should also be sized to accommodate future tools and purchases. If it can only accommodate the current tools, it will most likely be too small in a few short years. Planning for the future will ensure that a new shed will not need to be purchased for years to come. Finally, once all of these considerations are met, one is able to search for and purchase the appropriate shed. Styles, sizes and materials will vary greatly so it is a matter of personal preference and needs that will determine which is obtained. Once the right one is found, the homeowner just needs to decide if this shed will be delivered and installed by the home improvement store or if the unit will be erected by the homeowner themselves. Once this is in place and all of the tools are hung, more time can be spent enjoying the garden and the property.
